This should help you start... (Error in the working below -- yellow in the end is 53 + 59 = 112, Yellow at first = 152 + 112 = 264)

But they had the same number of each colour

What I have drawn is the 'after' model. Referring to your earlier comment, I think you misread the question -- 152 given away is only for the yellow beads. Now we know there were 254 yellow, red and purple beads at first, we can work out how many red beads were given away.

by what you are doing, u mean that to leave the rope as it is, you need 3 minutes, which does not make sense.

think about what you do when cutting the rope into 4 pieces. What exactly is the ACTION that takes up the time?

No. of Cuts = No. of Pieces - 1 Hence cuts for 4 pieces = 4 - 1 = 3 cuts 3 cuts = 12 minutes 1 cut = 4 minutes Cuts for 12 pieces = 12 - 1 = 11 cuts 11 x 4 minutes = 44 minutes

Serina Goh, when we do 12/4, it's like we are carrying out 4 tasks (e.g. making 4 ropes), but in cutting to get 4 pieces, we only need to make 3 cuts, so, 4 min/cut. To get 12 pieces, we need only 11 cuts, so 44 minutes.

Leonie R Tan, the mistake in your working on the right was taking 1 unit to be 140. I have drawn a model to show.

Soo Vei Li

The answer that's marked correct isn't exactly the final answer required because it's not left in the simplest form.
