That's true, but the average of the two chickens is still 4.8 kg and the sum of the two chickens is still 2 x 4.8 = 9.6.

If you consider that the difference between the masses of the two chicken is 1.24 kg, the heavier chicken must be half of 1.24kg above the average and the lighter chicken must be half of 1.24kg below the average.
