a) Total increased by 12, average increased by 2. Hence, 12 Γ· 2 = 6 students b) Total decreased by 3, average decreased by 3 Γ· 6 = 0.5 New average = 27.5

SG chevron_right Primary 6 chevron_right Number and Algebra

Yesterday, I shared a question and a method of solving that raised some concern with some members of the tutoring fraternity.I would like to clarify that there isn't any best way to solve any Math problem. As long as the method is Mathematically sound and correct, it is good to go. Similarly, there isn't any best question to use to illustrate the use of any particular method. Unless, the question is a question that is set in an examination paper. That would warrant the deliberation of what is a better question to give to test the understanding of any particular concept. However, I do acknowledge that the method I shared yesterday may not be suitable for some students. I would like to reiterate the reason why I shared that method. I wanted to cater to those parents who were concerned about using the algebra method to solve Math problems. Hence, the sharing of that particular method. Today, I will share how to solve the same question, using the Model Method. Hope it helps!

In the two cases, 5 pears ($4) are 'exchanged' for 8 oranges. This means that 8 oranges cost $4. With this info, we can find the cost of an orange.

6 pears $4.80 & 11 pears $8.80 Difference is $4 8 orange which is 20-12 is $4.00 div 8 = 0.50

Something wrong with question? Ans: 7/11 multiply 1/3 = 7/33 (answer is less than 1) (A) can't be because it's obvious 7/11 PLUS 3 is not 7/11 x 3 (B), (C) and (D) answers are all more than 1. Eg 3 + ... 11/7 is already more than 1... So by visual analysis, you conclude A B C D is not answer

Chyesoon Koh

It's MCQ ... It's not necessary to work out all answers and workings: just by visual inspection, one can derive the answer

Looks like not in the choices, should be (7/11)/3 Wherein: (7/11)/3 is the same as (7/11) x (1/3)
