SG chevron_right Primary 6 chevron_right Number and Algebra

Try this question out! Muthu had $30. If he spent the money on 7 similar pens and 8 similar pencils, he would have $0.20 left. If he spent all the money on 8 such pens and 7 such pencils, he would be short of $0.20. How much did 1 pen cost? This question can be solved via different methods. However, since there has been quite a bit of chat about whether or not the algebra method can be used at primary school, I decided to use this question to illustrate how we can use algebra in primary school. This video shows how a question is solved using simultaneous equations but without the complexity of typical algebra solutions. Sounds like a paradox but, it is true that we can present an algebraic solution without using X and Y. Watch the video to find out!
