The concept for (a) is that because the area of triangle is half*base*height, we can conclude that since both the base and height of triangle BAD are equal to the base and height of triangle BDC, the area of the two triangles are also equal.

I drew the blue showing 2 : 3, then added the orange for 7 : 4, bearing in mind that the lengths for both classes must be equal. After that, I realised that I can compare (and align -- see the dotted lines) the orange units and blue units for both classes to conclude that 3 orange equal 1 blue.

For both classes, there are 4 orange units at the end and 2 blue units at the start, so I can conclude that the extra blue unit in 5B is equal to the 3 extra orange units from 5A (I shaded them green).

Assuming you placed 180at the right place and the total is meant to be 400, it would mean Ruth ran 220m. That's not possible because Ruth ran less than Ronald. That's how we check for reasonableness.

Get your daughter to try it out without your help. Then ask her questions about whether her answers are reasonable, plus get her to explain her thinking. These processes are more valuable than the answers.

Yes, there's more than one possible answer. The other solution involves division. If your daughter has learnt how to draw that type of model, then she could offer that as an alternative solution.
