Pls help Pri 6 math. "Mrs Tan bought 350 pens at $5 each. She sold 5/7 of them at a certain price and another 60 of them at 1/4 more than before. She gave away the rest of pens. If she made a total profit of $650, find the two different price of which she sold the pens. "

Basically we start with her selling methods. She sold 250 at a certain price and 100 at 1/4 more than that certain price. She made a profit of $650 so in total she collected (350 x $5) + $650 = $2400 So work in units (can draw model blocks also) Say the certain price is 4u then your increased price is 5u In total she received 250 sell at 4u = 1000u And 100 sell at 5u = 500u 1500u = $2400 (amount she gets) 1u = $1.6 So her 2 prices are 4u = $1.6 x 4 = $6.4 And 5u = $1.6 x 5 = $8

One last step. remember to check. $6.4 x 250 = $1600 And $8 x 100 = $800 Total $2400

But she sold 250 at certain price, another 60 at a quarter more than before. She gave away the rest 40 (ie 100 -60)?

Oh my apologies. Missed that bit with the handwriting. I am afraid I have not derived an answer yet. Perhaps someone else here will.

Maybe due to the scribbled handwriting. I repost it again. Thanks Eugene Ng Ming Teck

I think something wrong with question. I can solve it if she sells 40 and gives away 60 but not the other way round

Agreed Eugene Ng Ming Teck.. Something wrong with the QN..? Will not get a whole figure if sell 60..but 40 given away.. It will be decimals...

Thanks. This question is from Visible Thinking and I believe the answer given in the book is wrong because they said for Ryan at the end should be 494 stamps.
