And this one too. My P5 kid tried to guess and check and he is quite fast at guessing figures in his head (can see his erased answer), but he is not sure how to show working. Is this by model method?

I can rephrase it as: 100 pupils participated in the competition. each of the students either scored 80 marks or 70 marks. If the average mark is 76 marks,how mamy pupils scored 70 marks?

What we know: Total pupils -> 100 Total marks -> 100 x 76 = 7600 marks Boy -> 80 marks Girl -> 70 marks Assuming all girls: Total marks = 70 x 100 = 7000 Extra marks remaining = 7600 - 7000 = 600 Difference between boy and girl = 80-70 = 10 Find number of boys: 600 / 10 = 60 Find number of girls: 100 - 60 = 40 Check: Boys = 60 x 80 = 4800 Girls = 40 x 70 = 2800

Think of it this way when coaching your child:

How many quantities are there in this question? (i.e. how many unknowns?) What strategies are commonly used to solve questions involving 2 quantities (i.e. Guess and Check, Make a Supposition, Restate the problem etc.) In this case, using the strategy of supposition will be appealing because we do not know the relationship between these 2 items. For weaker students, perhaps guess and check would be easier to understand. Nonetheless, students should learn both methods so that they can use them to check against one another.Cheers.

Lee Yuet Meng: Your child has good number sense. It's time to train on his presentation of answers but ensure he doesn't keep erasing what he has jotted down. His written thoughts do help examiners to interpret and award accurately in an assessment setting.

Annie Sem..I fully understand about the answer..thks for the explanation.. My main intent is for the kids here to understand the concept of Gap/Diffence.. Gap== 9-(-3)..am I right? The actual total score of the 4 students is 315...without the gap and difference.. Thanks Annie..
