Since there are twice the no of 20cents coin for every 50¢ coins
Grouping
Two 20¢+One50¢== $0.90
$17.10÷$0.90== 19
There are 19 sets
Nineteen 50¢ coins
Thirty Eight 20¢ coins

Yuet Meng,
2unit x 20cents + 1 unit x 50cents => 1710cents
40cents unit + 50cents unit => 1710cents
90cents unit =>1710cents
1 unit => 1710cents/90cents
1 unit => 19
20 cents coins => 2 x 19
=>38
There are 38 20-cents coins.

As for me trial and error is not advisable for these kind of questions.... more time consuming but if u are comfortable then its OK
..as long u get the correct answer

Grouping seems most straightforward.

Yuet Meng, draw the comparison model and teach the child to find the value of 20cents coins and 50cents coins. That is what we teach them in school.
That's how I came up with the answer above.

Another method
Dif in value of 50¢ coins and 20¢ coins.
50-20== 30 cents diff
$17.10÷30¢== 57 coins
20¢coins-2 units
50¢coins-1 unit
3units=57
1 unit= 19
2unit=38
