The sequence repeats in sets of 4, where in 1 set, there is a rocket, a ball, a train, and a car. This means that for every 4 objects, the cycle repeats. So on the 218th object...
218 / 4 = 54 R 2
This shows that the cycle repeats itself 52 times already, and so what is the 2nd object that follows up when a cycle repeats itself?

1st object = 5th object = 9th object = 13th object....
Notice all these numbers (1,5,9,13) will give a remainder of 1 when divided by 4.

2nd object = 6th object = 10 object = 14 object ....
These numbers give a remainder of 2 when divided by 4.

4x50 =200 remaining 18
4x4=16 so remaining 2 which in this case is the ball

Your child seems to have an idea what to do but didn't follow his method through. Building on from his thinking is important too: Since 218 is not divisible by 4, then we know 218th can't be the car. What's the nearest number to 218 that is a multiple of 4? 216, which means 216th is the car. How many positions to the left or the right of the car is 218th? Even if your child says 220 or 200 is the nearest multiple, it's still ok because we can work out 218th from 220 or 200.

Good to let the children know when their thinking is correct, then give them ideas on improving or extending their thinking.
