Just to clarify, is there a mistake in the question -- is the amount that May has left $1400 instead of $1700?

Could be. Cos when my husband tried to solve it using algebra method, he didn't get a whole number as answer.
If it is $1400, how would you solve it using model or other method?

B's slower speed of 2km/h caused B to be behind A by 1/5 of the route after 4h.
Hence,
1/5 of route = 4h x 2km/h
= 8km
Length of route = 8km x 5
= 40km/h

7am --> 10am
3h has passed.
Distance travelled by P= 3h x 60km/h
= 180km
Distance travelled by Q= 300km - 180km
= 120km
Speed of Q= 120km/3h
= 40km/h .

Rate of first tap: 1/4 tank/h
Rate of second tap: 1/3 tank/h
Amount filled in 1 hour = 1/4 + 1/3
= 7/12 tank
Rate of third tap = -1/2 tank/h
Net rate of water flowing out = 1/4 - 1/2
= -1/4 tank/h
Time taken for tank to be empty= (7/12) / (1/4) h
= 7/3 h
= 2h 20min.

Rate of first pipe=1/6 pool/h
Rate of second pipe= 1/8 pool/h
Total volume of water in pool after two hours= 2x (1/6 + 1/8)
= 7/12 pool full.
Rate of third pipe= -1/12 pool/h
Net rate of water filling up= 1/8 + 1/6 - 1/12
= 5/24 pool/h
Volume of pool not yet filled = 5/12 pool
Time taken= (5/12) / (5/24) h
= 2h
Total time taken= 2h + 2h
= 4h.
