"3/5" suggests that the total number of children is a multiple of 5, so change the initial ratio to 15:20.
1/4 of the 20u of girls left, so 15u remained.
3/5 of the total 35u remained, which is 21u, so 6u of boys remained, and 9u of boys left.

Can someone suggest an alternative solution to this P6 question other than using G&C?

suppose all packets bought are flour.the total mass would be 150kg. The diff would thus be 150kg-0kg=150kg. For every packet sugar instead of flour, the difference increases by 2.5kg+2kg=4.5kg. So the number of sugar is (150kg-42kg)/4.5kg=24.

2.5kg comes from 1less packet of flour,2kg comes from one packet of sugar.

another Q that uses the same approach is the student participates in game Q.

E.g. a student participates a game contest and answers 50questions. For every correct question answered, he scores 3 points. For every question answered wrongly, 2 marks will be deducted. Given that the student answered all questions and scored a total of 60 points, findthe number of questions correctly answered.
