This should help you start. It's a representation of the problem. After the 1/3 has been marked for pink, we ask how we can subdivide the other 2 units to get fifths. LCM of 2 and 5 is 10, so we subdivide the 2 units into 10 smaller units in order to show 4/5.
We can draw models to represent the problem. Since information is given about the units of apples and pears at the end, we can start from there and work backwards.
How many units for pears and how many units for apples?
What was the number of apples that was added? Represent it on the diagram.
What amount of pears were sold? Represent it on the diagram.
Now that I have the 'before' diagram, can I see equal units to represent a certain quantity?

5 units - 2 units = 3 units
3 units = 24
1 unit = 8
5 units = 40

Gill Kaur, get your child to draw a model for the problem and come up with the solution with some prompting questions from you: How many parts for the whole class (5)? How many parts are boys -- show by shading (2)? Which parts represent the quantity 24 (3)? See of he/she can work out the solution after that.
