I think extra information is required? Not enough to resolve.

Use number pattern and it will be easy for them to see 😊

But if qn ask abt pattern 20, then have to list out all the way to 20? I dont think so right? Thot there should be a formula but I can't make it out.

There's a formula but for P4 think they are not require to know...

靖雯 黄
Here is the formula
n(n+2) /2
But I don't think P4 will come out with pattern 20, usually up to 10.

To find no. of black squares = 1/2x(n)(n+1)
To find total no. of squares = n x n (square numbers)
To find no. of white squares = total no. of sq - no. of black sq
where n = Pattern no.

Just curious, n x n = total no of squares
For pattern 1, 1x1 =1
But in the Q above it's 4 squares
Think ur formula is suitable if the pattern 1 is start with 1 box

For all pattern problems at P4 level, it will be intent of the setter to let the pupils list down what they see from the first pattern, like in this case, 1 black and guide the pupils to write pattern 2 as 1 + 2 instead of just counting to 3 black. For that case, nothing common is repeated from the first pattern which will be clear if it's written as 1 + 2. Following this Idea, we can guide our pupils to solve most of the problems I this genre.

Alternatively, you may also use unitary approach using the concept that the TOTAL remained UNCHANGED.
A = 5u
B = 1u
A = 3u
B= 3u
2u = 30
1u = 15
5u = 75
There were 75 marbles in Box A at first.

Try it at home. If you start of with same amount of sweets, and give 2 to other person. The difference is always double of the amount given.
This is because a person reduce by 2, another add 2. Making the difference double of the given amount.

Don't be stressed. You'll get the hang of it. Importantly is a positive and willing to learn attitude, and to understand the solution. So ask till you understand.

Thanks for your encouragement Yueh Mei, seriously I'm not good in Maths, sometimes very helpless whn my girl ask me for help. Thanks for knowing this Maths Model Method-Singapore allow me to ask you all kind and helpful friends.

I can't tell when need to draw models or which models to apply....

Tan Chin Tiong
Cyn Puan, as a teacher, I must say that it is wrong to say you are not good in primary school maths. If that is true, then it would be hopeless for many children. I believe that with effort and guidance, all can excel. Now is just the stage that you need to convert your algebra power in to model. Takes a while but I know you will get there. Be positive and believe. If you can give up, what more about your child. :)

The model is to help the solver visualise the problem, make sense of the data and the relationship between the data. Usually if there's comparison data, it's useful to use the model to understand better. If one can comprehend without the model, then don't need to use. But if drawing helps, the solution can be quite straight forward.

Beginning might be tough, I'm sure after some exposure and practice, you'll get the hang of it.
