To check why $2800 is incorrect: if he saved $2800, then he spent $2800+$4200=$7000. With that, his salary = $7000 + $2800 = $9800. The info given was that his salary is twice amount saved in April which should be $7000.

Better to draw a model to illustrate the difference between expenditure and savings.. Then look for 1 unit..

14 apples, 10 pears, 6 oranges = 2 x 2030 = 4060 4 pears, 8 oranges = 4 x 420 = 1680 (Add both together) 14 apples, 14 pears, 14 oranges = 4060 + 1680 = 5740 (Divide by 7) 2 apples, 2 pears, 2 oranges = 5740 รท 7 = 820

I think the best method is guess and check. I was lucky and guessed correctly on the first try, but I would follow this process until I came to the correct amounts.

Thank you!

Don't ever use guess and check, it is unreliable and time consuming. You don't want to depend on luck during exams. There is always a method to solving maths systematically.

Adrian Ng, your starting data is wrong. It is 3 oranges, not 2. Please always check before posting, a wrong solution confuses and wastes people's time.
