Part b is not clear if it's asking for area of rectangle or the figure.

Oh OK. ...I think it's asking for the total of 17 units, so
2 units = 24
1 unit = 12
17 units = 12×17 = 204 cm sq

H made up of 3 parts total 11 units. We have 5 units so the remaining of H is 6 units. Easier if you see it from the diagram.

When I drew my model, I started with men having 2 units while boys have 1 unit. However, the problem said that the number of men was 5 times the number of girls so I decided to subdivide each of the units I drew first into 5 smaller units. This way, I have 10 units for men, 5 units for boys and 2 units for girls.
Going back to the first statement, the number of adults was twice the number of children. The boys (5 units) and the girls (2 units) give you a total of 7 units. Twice of that 7 units will be the number of adults which is 14. However, I already know that there were 10 units of men thus, the number of women must be 4 units to make the total number of units for adults 14.
Then, since the units are all of the same size, I simply compared the number of girls to the number of women. The number of women was 2 units more than the number of girls thus, 2 units must be 20.
From there, you can solve for whatever is asked.
I hope you find my comment useful.. cheers.. :)

This problem has been doing the rounds....I think there was a CONTEXT. The idea was to trigger some calculations by the learners. Any of the possible answers would be correct. The point was to come up with some reasoning....challenge the mind....I rather like this problem ! I also think people try and use this problem to rediculise the maths fraternity??
