Need help. Know that the solution is wrong . How to explain the child ?AS her mother received 99 more fruits than each child- My child multiplies 99*5= 495.

As in the drawn model, 1/4 of total, represented by the big rectangle is equal to 5 small rectangles. So cut up each big rectangle into 5 small ones. Let's call each small rectangle "u". Then what the mother receives is 10u and each child gets 1u. So 10u-1u=9u --> 99. 1u --> 11 Original total: 20u --> 220.

Part of the problem solving process should include checking the answer. In this case, it is good for your child to use his/her answer and work backwards and see if the conditions are met (eg, amount father gets, mother gets 99 more than each child, etc). This way, your child can 'see' why the answer can't be correct.

The word " more" can be a bit confusing. "More" can be more x. Child gets 5 so mom gets 5x99. Here was meant "plus 99" more than the children. The english language can have subtle differences. We should try to explain the words clearly .

Start with the end - equal units. Since no one losses or gains any seashells, we know each unit is 360/2=180. Work backwards from there.
