How do we solve this problem using bar models?Apples are sold at 3 for $2 at Busy Mart. At Big Foods, the same apples are sold at 5 for $2. Kissim buys 15 apples from Big Foods instead of Busy Mart. How much does he save?

Thank you very much! We are trying to learn the bar model ... Still trying to get a handle on it.

Sorry for the finger drawing. But I'm sure you get the idea. Haha.

It's tricky at first - but once you do it a few times you start to see problems in bars. Haha.

If you haven't seen these already, they might be helpful. Scroll down for bar modelling http://www.threebridgesprimary.co.uk/page/singapore-maths/88

therefore, orginal 4 duck parts + 5 chicken parts=78. 3 duck parts and 2 chicken parts is 48(left). Hence sold was 1 duck part with 3 chicken parts=30. To make it 3 duck parts, we have 3 duck parts and 9 chicken parts=90. Hence 7 chicken parts =32, once chicken part is 4. There were 5 chicken parts=20? hope i get it right. otherwise can someone enlightened me how to solve this..came from the old algebra school.

D+C= 78 ------1 3/4D (1:3) + 2/5C (2:3)= 48 So 15D+ 12C= 960 ------2 --1 - -----2 = 7C = 210 Chicken = 30

Both the solutions presented seem like they are using simultaneous equations to solve.. Something only taught in Sec 2. Are our primary school students expected to know this method? Or can the question be solved using the model method?

Mavis Low, if u try to recall, the kids were alrdy exposed to such concept when they were in P2. Example ☀️+⭐️=30 4☀️+⭐️= 60 Find the value of ☀️ and ⭐️

Here's the model method without the abstract algebraic representation but which primary school students can understand because it is more visual. This is one way to foster pre-algebraic thinking in younger students.

Colours are used only to avoid using curly brackets.
