See when we get such equations in terms of varibles then we try to cancel one variable .....like here you see there are two variables a & b .. and first equation is having 2a+3b and we want to cancel 2a from equation 2 ..... so we multiply equation 2 by 2 as: 2×(a+b)=2×0.85 2a+2b=1.70 Now subtract this from equation 1 that is why i have written equation 1 - 2× equation 2 So it becomes 2a + 3b = 2.10 -2a-2b=1.70 -------------------------- b=0.40 ( since 2a -2a gets cancelled and 3b-2b gives b likewise 2.10-1.70 gives you 0.40 hence b=0.40 )
