Let x be the price of the jeans before discount. Cost of 2 jeans = 0.9x +0.8x = 1.7x 1.7x = $136 x = $80 Cost of 1 jean = 90% x $80 = $72

John had one third as many as erasers as pens. He went to an orphanage and gave each orphan 4 erasers and 3 pens. Subsequently, he discovered that he had 6 erasers and 180 pens left. a. How many orphans were there inthe orphanage? b. How many erasers did John have at first?

Let the number of orphans be x. 3 (x (4) + 6) = x(3) + 180; 12x + 18 = 3x + 180; 9x = 162; x = 18; number of erasers = 18 x 4 + 6 = 78; a. There are 18 orphans. b. John has 78 erasers.
